It was determined that sodium metaborate is not classified as a material of class 4.3. The gas was not tested for flammability.
Appearance before test: White crystalline solid.
Appearance after test: A white honeycomb-like solid remained, which was reduced to approximately half of its initial volume.
It was determined that the test substance should be classified as not a self-heating substance of Class 4, Division 4.2.
From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen not to ignite and therefore no further testing was required.
Initially the sample melted to a white paste, boiled then glowed pale red while in contact with the ignition source. No propagation of this reaction was observed.
Description of key information
Flammable solids
Flammability test was done according to EU method A.10 under GLP compliance. From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen not to ignite and therefore no further testing was required. Initially the sample melted to a white paste, boiled then glowed pale red while in contact with the ignition source. No propagation of this reaction was observed.
Substances/mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gaese
Substances/mixtures which in contact with water test was done according to UN Test N.5 under GLP compliance. The sample does not show ignition when gas released and in addition the gas evolution is lower than 1 liter per kilogram of substance and hour.
Self-heating substances/mixtures
Self-heating substances/mixtures test was performed according to the UN manual of test and criteria Test N.4 under GLP compliance. No positive effect was observed (appearance before test: white crystalline solid, appearance after test: a white honeycomb-like solid remained, which was reduced to approximately half of its initial volume). The substance does not need to be classified as self-heating substance.
Pyrophoric solids
Study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
The substance does not need to be classified for each of the flammability endpoints as there is no ignition of the test item and no propagation was observed. Further the test item did not undergo any dangerous self-heating when tested in a 100mm sample cube at 140°C. In addition, no ignition of an evolved gas was observed and also no gas evolution greater than 1 litre per kilogramm substance per hour. The substance is also known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days).
