Description of key information
A key study (freshwater) was carried out according to EPA OPPTS 850.1735 (Whole Sediment Acute Toxicity of Invertebrates, freshwater) and ASTM E 1706-00 Guideline: Standard Test Methods for Measuring the Toxicity of Sediment-Associated Contaminants with Fresh Water Invertebrates. The 10-day EC50 values for midges (Chironomus tentans) exposed to test item in sediment for percent survival and growth (as ash-free dry weight) were 1209 and 1063 mg AI/kg dry sediment, respectively. Based on the results of this study, the LOEC was 500 mg AI/kg dry sediment and the NOEC was 250 mg AI/kg dry sediment for both percent survival and ash-free dry weight.
A second key study (marine) was carried out according to EPA OPPTS 850.1740 (Whole Sediment Acute Toxicity of Invertebrates, marine) and ASTM E 1367-99 Guideline: Standard Guide for Conducting 10-Day Static Sediment Toxicity Tests with Marine and Estuarine Amphipods. The 10-day EC50 value for Leptocheirus plumulosus exposed to test item in sediment was 26 mg AI/kg dry sediment based on percent survival. Based on the results of this study, the LOEC for survival was 25 mg AI/kg dry sediment and the NOEC was 13 mg AI/g dry sediment.
