New CLH consultations launched for a biocide and an industrial chemical

ECHA has started a 45-day public commenting period on the harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) proposal for the biocide clorofene and the industrial chemical 2-methyl-1-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2-morpholinopropan-1-one.

Clorofene is used in disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals and in veterinary hygiene. This biocide does not have a harmonised classification and the dossier submitter (Norway) is proposing a classification for health and environmental hazards.

The substance 2-methyl-1-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2-morpholinopropan-1-one is used as a photosensitive agent. It already has a harmonised classification and the dossier submitter (BASF) is proposing an additional classification for reproductive toxicity. The deadline for submitting comments is 24 October 2014.

On 9 September 2014, ECHA sent out its annual news readership survey asking for your feedback on our e-News and Newsletter. We encourage you to participate, as it is your chance to help us improve our news services to you for the coming years. You will have received an individual email to your inbox with a link to the survey. However, if you are a news subscriber and have not yet received the link, please let us know at: surveys@echa.europa.eu.

The survey will stay open until 30 September 2014.

New functionalities on ECHA-term to improve its usability

ECHA-term, ECHA's multilingual chemical terminology database supporting your work in 23 EU languages is now more user-friendly. Check the new features and make the best use out of it. The new features offer:

• Possibility to select more than one target language in the search screen;
• More download options — you can type one single entry and download it in the languages chosen or select the list of all or certain terms as usual;
• Possibility to download the term and related information from the results screen.

In total, the database contains more than 1 300 entries in English. Users can consult the terms or their definitions in different languages and download the terms free of charge.

Biocides Stakeholders' Day conference — registration closed

24 September 2014, Helsinki

Registration for the Biocides Stakeholders' Day has closed as we have reached our maximum capacity. If you still wish to participate in the event, you can send an email to: echa-events@echa.europa.eu and request to be placed on a waiting list. If we receive cancellations, people on the list will be offered a place on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will also be web-streamed live. The web-stream link will be published in the e-News and on the ECHA website shortly before the event. Participants can also submit their questions to the panel remotely, by using a web form or through Twitter, with the hashtag #BiocidesDay.

Mixture classification and communicating safe use of mixtures. Advice for formulators and importers.

This webinar is about the classification of mixtures and on how information on the safe use of mixtures can be communicated in the supply chain. It aims to help formulators and importers understand and implement their obligations according to the REACH and CLP regulations relating to mixtures.

In anticipation of the 2015 deadline for classifying mixtures according to CLP, this webinar describes the steps a supplier should take to (re)classify mixtures. It also describes how formulators can handle and communicate the information they receive in exposure scenarios for hazardous substances. The related REACH and CLP obligations are outlined and participants are guided to the wide range of support material that is available to help fulfil these obligations.
