Last call to pre-register your low volume chemicals
To benefit from the extended deadline for registering existing, low volume chemicals by the last REACH registration deadline, you need to have pre-registered your substance with ECHA. If you manufacture or import a substance for the first time at or above 1 to 100 tonnes per year, and your substance is not a known carcinogen, mutagen or toxic to reproduction, you can still pre-register within six months of starting the activity, and at the latest by 31 May 2017 – one year before the deadline.

ECHA’s scientists promote alternative strategies for acute toxicity to reduce animal tests
A study by five ECHA scientists, led by Andrea Gissi and Kimmo Louekari, has been featured in the scientific journal ALTEX. The paper analyses data in the REACH registrations database that supports using weight-of-evidence approaches to cover the standard REACH requirements for acute toxicity. The authors conclude that using a weight-of-evidence approach, combined with other relevant information, could save an estimated 550 studies for substances expected to be registered for the REACH 2018 deadline.

Substitution of hazardous chemicals: two new case studies published
We just published two new case studies promoting the benefits of substituting hazardous chemicals.
The Adidas Group shares best practice from working with their supply chain to replace per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in their sporting goods. INERIS, the French national competence centre for industrial safety and environmental protection present their website that supports companies interested in substituting bisphenols.

List of successful notifiers of active substances available
A list of those substance and product-type combinations for which a compliant notification for inclusion in the review programme has been made is now available on our website. The list also includes the names of the notifying companies to help them collaborate to submit an application for approval of the active substance and help avoid unnecessary testing on animals. The active substance and product-type combinations will be added to the Article 95 list when the complete substance dossier is submitted and validated.

Alternatives to animal testing and international data sharing discussed with NGOs
ECHA met with stakeholders representing civil society at the NGO-ECHA Platform meeting to discuss the latest developments related to alternatives to animal testing. The meeting covered new requirements for skin sensitisation, the use of the Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity (FET) test, the status of expected testing proposals for the extended one-generation reproductive toxicity study (EOGRTS) and international data sharing.

Webinar: Enhancing European efforts to substitute substances of very high concern

The webinar will provide an overview of the key findings of the September 2016 report on informed substitution from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. It will look at the obstacles to substitution and opportunities identified. It will also give recommendations to enhance substitution support and related alternatives assessment activities in EU authorities, as well as addressing stakeholder feedback and ECHA's near-term plans.
