DDACarbonate was hydrolytically stable during the thirty-day hydrolysis study at pH 5, 7 or 9 at 25 °C.
Several studies are available assessing the ready biodegradability potential of Didecyldimethylammonium carbonate and the chemical analog Didecyldimethylammonium chloride. In the key study according to OECD Guideline 301 B (Ready Biodegradability: CO2 Evolution Test) the biodegradability of Didecyldimethylammonium carbonate was determined with a non-adapted activated sludge over a test period of 28 days in the Modified Sturm Test. The 10 % level (beginning of biodegradation) was reached after 11 days and the pass level of 60 % after 19 days. The mean biodegradation came to 96 % after 28 days. The results were confirmed in a supporting study reaching the pass-level within the 10-day window and with a biodegradation rate of 99 % after 28-days.
Additional evidence on the ready biodegradation was obtained in studies using the chemical analog Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) in a read-across approach. All studies revealed ready biodegradation not only in activated sludge, but also when exposed to unacclimated microorganisms obtained from a receiving system representative of a site where these test substances may be expected to be discharged. A study using 14C-radiolabelled substance revealed that 14CO2 production and disappearance of parent (primary biodegradation) were most accurately described by the 2 compartment function kinetic analysis.
According to REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex IX, column 2, section 9.2.1.4 experimental determination of biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests was waived, as the substance is readily biodegradable.
According to REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex IX, column 2, section 9.2.1.3 experimental determination of biodegradation in soil was waived, as the substance is readily biodegradable.
According to REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex IX, column 2, section 9.3.2 experimental determination was waived as the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow = 0.053; <= 3). Using a simple QSAR model the calculated log BCF = 0.85 x log Kow - 0.70 = -0.65495 (BCF = 0.2213) (ECHA Guidance CSR R.7c, 2012). Waiving of the study is further supported by data on a study carried out according to EPA OPP 165-4 (Laboratory Studies of Pesticide Accumulation in Fish) using the structural analog 14C-didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC).
Experimental determination of adsorption/desorption potential was waived as the physical/chemical nature of DDACarbonate (surface active properties and high solubility in octanol and water) does not allow for experimental determination of the log Koc. Instead the absorption coefficient was calculated to be Koc = 1.10E+06 (log Koc = 6.04). The calculated Koc value was confirmed in a study according to U.S. EPA-FIFRA N-163-1 40 CFR, Sec. 158.130 and 158.50 using the structural analog Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC).
