ECHA/NR/20/15

The May issue of ECHA Newsletter takes a closer look at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and explains why they need to be regulated. You can also learn more about how the Agency is investigating potential risks that lead in ammunition and fishing weights can pose to human health and the environment.

Helsinki, 28 May 2020 – The guest column on PFAS comes from US lawyer and author Robert Bilott who has devoted his career to help people that have been exposed to these chemicals. His story is the inspiration behind the Hollywood film “Dark Waters”.

Colleagues from national poison centres and appointed bodies tell how the new information requirements can help them when responding to emergency calls and what companies should keep in mind when preparing their notifications.

We introduce the SCIP database prototype and explain how simplified SCIP notification and referencing can make it easier for companies to comply with their obligations.

In addition, we speak with the Chair of the Enforcement Forum to find out her views on how impactful harmonised enforcement has been and what the future holds.

You can also read about a voluntary platform for cooperation between the Member States, ECHA and the European Commission called RIME+ and how it contributes to implementing ECHA’s Integrated Regulatory Strategy efficiently.
