ECHA publishes an illustrative chemical safety report

The new publication gives tips and advice to registrants on how to avoid common deficiencies and improve the quality of submitted information.

Helsinki, 21 May 2012 - To facilitate companies in complying with their obligations under REACH, ECHA has developed an illustrative chemical safety report (CSR). Registrants are required to submit a CSR as part of their registration dossier for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of  10 tonnes or more per year.  The report provides a summary of all the relevant information used when carrying out the chemical safety assessment for their substance.

ECHA's illustrative CSR demonstrates the assessment of a hypothetical monoconstituent organic substance which is used principally in coating applications.  It includes an introductory note with hints and tips to consider when planning and writing your CSR and an example CSR that is consistent with the format set out in REACH Annex I. This illustrative CSR exemplifies how to describe uses for a substance in an efficient manner; assess the hazards, including a PBT assessment; estimate exposure to the environment and human health using a range of estimation methods and build exposure scenarios for manufacture and industrial, professional and consumer uses. 

Notes and other inserts are used at key points in the CSR to explain when critical factors need to be considered and how they can be resolved. 

The publication has been developed using ECHA's guidance and Chesar, the ECHA's Chemical Safety Assessment and Reporting web tool available on the Agency website. The format of the illustrative CSR also contains some of the new features being developed in IUCLID and Chesar, which are due to be released later this year.
