Biocidal Products Committee adopts 17 opinions

ECHA/NA/16/39

The Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) has adopted opinions supporting the approval of six active substances for use in biocidal products used as disinfectants and preservatives.

Helsinki, 19 December 2016 – During its 18th meeting, the Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) adopted opinions for the following active substances:

  • Peracetic acid generated from tetra-acetylethylenediamine (TAED) and sodium percarbonate for product-types 2, 3 and 4;
  • Active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for product-types 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5;
  • Active chlorine released from calcium hypochlorite for product-types 2, 3, 4 and 5;
  • Active chlorine released from chlorine for product-types 2 and 5;
  • MIT for product-type 11; and
  • OIT for product-type 8.

The committee concluded that these substances may be approved in the relevant product-types.

The adopted opinions will support the European Commission and the Member States in deciding on the approval of those active substances.

The approval of an active substance is granted for a defined number of years, not exceeding 10 years.

One opinion for non-approval was adopted for the active substance MBIT for product-type 13. MBIT is a new active substance intended to be used as a working or cutting fluid preservative. The reason for the non-approval is that there are unacceptable risks identified for groundwater for several metabolites of MBIT.

In 2016, the BPC adopted 53 opinions: 45 on active substance approval and 8 on the renewal of active substance approval. In 2015, the BPC adopted 49 opinions on active substance approval.
